What's the angsty-est story you've ever wanted to write?

Although I am better known for writing comedy, I admit that I'm sort of hankering to write something with real angst to it, and have been sort of flitting between one story idea or another, trying to figure out how to do that without becoming morbid or violent or melodramatic. I have at least one story I started in the past that was pretty much nothing but angst (and D and E didn't end up together at the end), but it turned out not to be a feasible idea... yet there was just something really compelling about the idea of writing all that soul-searching and agony.

I also once thought of writing a story where Darcy and Elizabeth are headed to Pemberley after the wedding and she dies in a carriage accident on the way there. For real. And that was pretty much the opening sequence.

So I was just wondering what ideas others have entertained for ripping out the guts of their readers. What ideas have you been tempted by, but not carried through, for one reason or another?
