One added note: Jane in the novel went through a bit of a breakdown herself after the Box Hill incident. She went through a period of time when she wasn't really eating anything and was staying in her room. I think it could be argued that she, too, had had a very difficult year of transitions (health challenges, best friend's marriage, returning home, relationship with Frank and its dissolution, her interactions with Emma), and at some point she started to melt down.
