There are different reasons why a person may choose to use a credit card versus a debit card, but I've always understood that credit cards offer better protection against fraud.
Regarding the $50 that credit card consumers are still responsible for that you mentioned, it's important to note that it's not a "you will be" responsible sort of amount but a cap of what you "may be" responsible for. As far as I'm aware, all major banks and credit companies offer zero liability for fraudulent charges made on credit cards (or at least almost all, if not all).
