I did have my debit card stolen and wiped out. They were mostly smart and used it where pins aren't required like gas and fast food.
Once I reported it stolen the bank froze it and immediately granted a partial refund so that I wasn't broke during the investigation. It only took a few days for them to see it was a actually theft and give a full refund.
But, and I don't know if this is law or just my bank's policy, when a credit card is stolen you are still responsible for $50 of those purchases. When my debit card was stolen I was responsible for none of it and got all my money back.
