WOW! I thrilled with the response my query has gotten, and so many different topics have been covered. I have to say I personally like the character Jane. I also agree with Jim when he suggested that Jane and Anne Elliott were really the same character in two very different life situations. I also think Fanny Price is what you get if you place Jane in that life, just as Mary Crawford is an image of Elizabeth if she had her moral character distorted like Mary. It's funny because I think Miss Austen was aware of these similarities and was interested in how life circumstances helped mould persons of similar temperaments into different people. It's funny because exploring these what-ifs is what much of FF tries to do.
