So well said! And may I add that there are differences in the kinds of 'fan' in each fandom? As for P&P, there are those who love the regency romance between Darcy and Elizabeth and are mostly interested in the romantic aspect of Jane Austen's novels , there are those who appreciate and admire of the works of Jane Austen and treat them with reverence, and then there are those who love the concept of Darcy and Elizabeth and it doesn't matter if they are zombies or humans... fans come with a spectrum of expectations and tastes and there's a market for every kind and size. If making a profit is not the primary objective when one writes, while one may not get many of his/her books sold, the tribute to Jane Austen's masterly work through publishing (self or through an agent) one's own book must be enormously satisfying. Of course, it would be a definite bonus if one's book is well received and could make a nice profit.
