Personally, I think this is one of the best things about online writing and fan fiction communities like this one. Not only have they doubtlessly inspired many people who never thought of writing to do so, but they provide a support structure for those who want to write but just don't quite know how to start--and they let us get that much-needed practice. It's wonderfully unlimiting. You can borrow as much or as little from the original source as you like, and take your stories in any direction you want. You can write a few hundred words or a few hundred thousand. It's not nearly so much fun to write for yourself alone, getting rejected time and again in your attempts to get published. To come some place like this, to have a waiting audience, ready to be interested in what you write, is a tremendous thing. You get material and ideas to get you started, readers, advisers and proof-readers, if you want them, for as long as you want them. Like Renee, I know that I have improved a great deal in the time I've been writing JAFF, and I want to get better still. This is a good place to do it.
