Very true. I think those times when the characters take over are the ones all writers hope for, because that's when writing not only becomes easiest, but when it becomes its most dynamic and organic. A lot of the time, writing is just plain hard--when there's no inspiration, and your characters aren't talking to you, and don't "feel it," and you have to just push through and push you characters to do and say something, even if you don't feel it's particularly fabulous. Eventually, if you persevere, then the pace will pick up again, and your characters will suddenly take on a life of their own again, and you're off for a little bit, until it begins to sputter again. At least, that's usually my experience. I would get a lot more written than I do if I was more disciplined about pushing through the rough spots, instead of cruising from one story to the next, hoping that inspiration with strike with one of them.
