Cut by PBS both for broadcast and PBS DVDs

Unfortunately, PBS cuts scenes from the films, miniseries and series they broadcast to make space for sponsoring advertisement. It is not widely known in general, but it was particularly noticed among Janeites back in 2008 when scenes we knew there were in the original UK broadcast did not appear also in the US broadcast.

Furthermore, these cuts also affect DVD's manufactured by PBS video branch: WGBH (with exception of the Downton Abbey DVD's, which thankfully include the complete version, though not the extras usually included in the region 2 DVDs). So this has happened with the region 1 DVDs of the 2007 Northanger Abbey and Mansfield Park, they have only the cut versions.

The 2007 Persuasion region 1 DVD has the full version because, although the film was not produced by BBC, BBC owns the distribution rights outside UK and they managed to get all the film. But I agree with Jim, not even the restored scenes could save that horrible adaptation of Persuasion.

That is why in my family we have ended up buying the UK region 2 DVDs of Inspector Morse and those of Lewis, because the region 1 manufactured by WGBH are cut versions.

For details of the missing scenes in the 2007 Northanger Abbey, here is a link to an entry at Austenblog, where I reported the situation:
