I also salute Alan's explanation. It makes better sense than what I have often read torturously argued -- only male line descendants of the original writer of the entail were eligible to inherit. I tried to rationalize that as best I could in my earlier comment further down this message stream but happily bow to Alan for offering a much better way of looking at it.
Now, I am just waiting for someone to jump out and claim yet again that no Bennet woman nor her issue could ever, under any circumstances, have inherited. But I hope Alan has settled this question.
