Re: Attacks on JA Fanfiction from the establishment

I've been inclined to moan rather, myself, so mea culpa - though when I've bothered to review I TRY to be constructive - at the outrageously anachronistic language/behaviour used by the characters, I've come across Lizzy saying 'okay' and 'alright' and the latter isn't even a proper word nowadays! There's also often a complete lack of understanding of the period; I've seen someone persistently having people going to balls in the London Pump Room. There are some glaringly inappropriate fictions, which are largely down to immaturity and lack of knowledge, and one can hope that having become interested in Austen, the perpetrators of such will learn and grow and deepen and broaden their knowledge. I believe most of the, shall we say, less well considered efforts are the offspring of those attracted to the TV versions, who have not backed up their attraction by reading the book.... yet.

I personally think that if young people are reading anything and going to the effort to expand their own interaction with their favourite characters through FanFiction they are more to be congratulated than condemned, but I just WISH they'd do a BIT of research... it would enrich their own experience of engaging with their heroes and heroines.

And I agree with Margaret, that in a smaller sample, you get less travesties than in the big fandoms. Which is why, on the whole, one has to search further on the other site for a good P&P story than other JA categories, as it's the largest by a long way.
The second largest fandom over all is Twilight, I believe - well it was, last time I looked - and that spawned Fifty Shades of Yawn. The most juvenile P&P effort has that beat hands down. QED....

By the way, AmazonCreateSpace is starting to offer a fanfiction publishing facility for certain categories given permission by the authors, so maybe FF is starting to move more into the mainstream.
As regards StarTrek, it is probably the oldest Fandom as FF stories have been appearing in Trekkie/StarFleet Battles magazines since before the internet existed.
