Interestingly, your remarks help me understand Darcy's reasoning for avoiding a connection with Elizabeth; he is a product of his environment. He he fully cognizant of his place in society; he is a handsome, well-connected, well-off Mr.. As you say, he would be nearly as much of his sphere, as Lady Catherine would say, seeking an alliance with the daughter of a peer as Elizabeth is in seeking to marry Darcy. Both were possible, but would raise eyebrows and provide the society ladies gossip for their morning calls.

I tend to overlook the over-the-top E's and D's in FF as long as the rest of their behavior is generally in character. However, ignoring the status difference changes the intent of JAs work. As for Elizabeth marrying Darcy for his money, I have more trouble believeing he would marry her knowing she was doing so for his money. A Darcy that somehow remains blissfully unaware that she doesn't love him (a bit unbelievable, but JA started him on that path) could resaonably marry an Elizabeth who holds no affection for him, but I cannot respect a Darcy who marrys her knowing she does not care; that is just weak, no pathetic.
