It happens in Dutch too - but then, it's a closely related language.

Once my children started going to school, they started to come home with beter dan mij (better than me), instead of beter dan ik. I always tell them to add ben (am), because then they can easily hear which is correct. It's actually a good thing to do in writing as well.

Some people will accept this as natural language change, but some of these things are simply sloppy and due to bad teaching.

I also dislike hun (them) as subject.
