It is interesting to me that Jane Austen apparently gave the Dashwoods just a bit more than she and her mother and sister had to live on. That episode of genteel poverty has always had the ring of truth experienced to me and I suppose that's why.
I like the estimate that a genteel lifestyle would require about 300 pounds per person per year. That is helpful in making rough calculations. It's also interesting that it would actually put the Bennets at a bit underfunded due to the size of the family. Although that one would be a bit different, because of course they have the house for free during Mr. Bennet's lifetime, and the produce from the home farm to eat.
