I think you meant to say, someone he would make happy? Because that is the problem. A woman would have to be an idiot to like him as written. The best he can hope for is to be tolerated, and in Charlotte, he found a sensible gentlewoman who would do exactly that.

I can imagine him being left on his own -- without the direction from Lady Catherine, for example -- and selecting some pretty little flibbertigibbet who takes him for his money before leaving him flat. He did have an eye for the ladies, since he looked first at Jane and Elizabeth in the Bennet home.

I also agree that plain Mary, who thought she was smarter than he and was probably correct, would only exasperate him over time -- if he could ever be made to agree to marry her. It's amazing to me that fanfic so frequently matches these two!?
