Re: Collins as Heir Presumptive

I had forgotten about that line. That makes sense as the inspiration for the movie. It's not quite as attracted as she comes across there, but it's a logical take.

I had often wondered about how Mary and Collins would get on together, practically. They're both so clueless and self-regarding that, even if they got on with each other tolerably well by flattering each other's vanities, it seems impossible that they should not at some point come a rather serious cropper with regard to the outside world. Mary is a little too clever, I think, to be in genuine awe of Lady Catherine for long as Collins is, and too earnestly sincere to flatter her deliberately as Charlotte does. It would be trouble sooner or later.

Charlotte is the perfect tempering force on Collins and really makes him an excellent wife. That he does not make her a very good husband, except in a purely prudential light, doesn't really alter the fact. It's hard to imagine the perfect wife for Collins, someone who would make him happy and by whom he would be made happy. I can't come up with a description.
