True. I think that mostly comes from the A&E version, where Mary clearly admired him. I don't remember much in the book beyond her admiring the soundness of his trite remarks, or something like that. I would imagine that Mary would not be disinclined to accept him, but I don't think the two of them would do well together. They would reinforce each other's weaknesses. With some plain but honest fellow Mary might lose some of her primness. It seems plain that most of her harsh edges are derived from neglect and a desire to stand out in some way. Admiration of any kind would doubtless soften her.

Kitty, on the other hand, could make a good clergyman's wife. She would take a lot of the tone of her character from her husband, not being a particularly strong personality herself, and if he were both devout and reasonable she would probably end up kind and respectable. I could see maternal affections doing a great deal for Kitty, too. An object for her time and attentions, respectable but not intellectual, would assist her greatly.
