There are also many lesser public schools, like our own local one,The Ipswich School, Felawe's House as it was in its inception around 1380. Cardinal Wolsey is its most famous Alumnus. Baldock is the nearest big town to the Bennets, which has the Knights Templar School. However, many quite small towns had Grammar Schools which were either private schools or public schools.
For those people who do not know, a private school is wholly owned by an individual or small group and run as they see fit; a public school is run by governors and the fees go to pay for the benefit of the pupils rather than any profits into the pockets of the owners. Both are what would be termed private schools in America. Public schools, naturally, have a better reputation than private schools, though almost all schools for girls would have been private schools perforce. Like Mrs Goddard's in 'Emma'. There's even a case to put for Mr Bennett founding a private school as a day school for his ward, his daughters, and any other young people in the vicinity, possibly taking on some of the education of the boys himself.
