Ugly, on the other hand, is in the eye of the beer holder, so he may or may not have been. Lizzy certainly did not see his looks as being an inducement. However, you are quite right that the book does not say he is ugly, so he might or might not have been. On that basis, he could be thought of in any way one might wish.
