One of the things I like best about Austen is how her characters (especially the female ones) manage to work within the bounds of their society to live authentic lives, honest to themselves and their ambitions. It resonates much more than over-the-top rebellion would, and sets a better (and more achievable) example to the audience, both contemporary and modern.
