I'm not nitpicking, just continuing the discussion. Literature is after all subjective and intrepretations are personal.
With regards to the use of the word "mortifying" when Darcy admits to himself of his attraction. An argument I have seen, and see as valid is that it is mortifying to Darcy because he sees his initial judgment as wrong, and Darcy is careful not to be wrong. Not that he's attracted to someone he feels is beneath him as some other interpret.
