We have dogs and a good way to control fleas in the carpet is to sprinkle on baking soda, let it sit for awhile and then vacuum it up - the fleas can't breathe in that stuff. Then throw out the vacuum bag. And it needs a follow-up in a few days for those eggs that hatch. Also, diatomaceous (sp?) earth - found at home improvement stores and pool supply places - works in carpet, too. It cuts through the fleas' chitons and kills them.
You can also put an exposed night light in an out of the way spot and put a bowl of water underneath. The fleas will be attracted to the heat, drop off the light bulb and into the water.
Also, I know Libby Pharmaceuticals makes Comfortis for dogs, so it might make something similar for cats. It's a pill taken once a month that kills fleas from the inside out. My dogs do very well on it, because the shih-tzu got sick the one time I tried to use the stuff you squeeze onto the back of their neck and shoulders.
Good luck!
