I don't agree with this. Mr.Darcy was a rich landowner from an ancient family, Mr.Bennet is an insignificant country squire. They did technically belong to the same class, but they were worlds apart socially. But no, the marriage was hardly a degradation for Darcy. I would say that, from a mercenary point of view, Elizabeth made a surprisingly brilliant match and Darcy a rather bad (but not scandalously bad), though stil respectable, one.
