I think the story you're looking for is A Fair Prospect. It's been published, so I'm not sure if it's still archived here. As I remember, in this story it was rather that Darcy thought this guy was a rival and had traded estates for Elizabeth's sake, when it turned out that the friend was in love with another woman who had a minor physical handicap that made it hard for her to walk.
