Re: plot idea -- Jane as heiress of Longbourn

The thing is, I think Darcy's main reason for thinking the connexion unhappy was the behavior of Mrs. Bennet and the younger girls. As long as they continued to behave the way they did, he would still feel the same, regardless of Jane's inheritance. Although Darcy is often written of as determined to marry a wealthy woman, nowhere in the book does he ever express concern about Elizabeth's lack of fortune, just her lack of family connections. I don't think he really cared that much that she was poor. Since Bingley is not as rich as him the money would be more welcome, but still, Darcy's main objections were that Bingley would be taking on a family who not only had such lowly connections, but who behaved with such impropriety and silliness. If you wrote the story so that Mrs. Bennet isn't as silly and desperate then it might work, but otherwise, those main objections would still stand.
