Of course that's not what Austen intended. If she had intended it, she would have written it that way. But like Marks, if I wanted to read only what Austen intended, I'd read Austen, not fanfic.

(And for the record, what you described IS a book, called Jane Fairfax, by Joan Aiken. It's an exploration of alternate points of view.)
