We pick up a piece of the reading puzzle and see that it's malleable. Moreover, we see the threads that connect it to the rest of the story, literally and subtextually, the dangling threads of possibilities, irony, and the piece's purpose within the structure. In this particular case, the thread of Anne accepting Charles was dangling until someone tied it up and loosened another thread. Oh, maybe it had to be reshaped a bit, but that's why the pieces of the puzzle are malleable. Austen did not write for dull elves, after all.
