This is the most recent version, The Sims 3. I have all the expansion and stuff packs, too, except for the most recent university one. They can take care of the basics themselves, like if they get hungry and you don't do anything about it they'll head for the fridge to whip something up. A tired child Sim will seek out an adult to read them to sleep. A Sim who has to use the toilet will drop what they're doing and head for the loo. The only thing is that if you have specifically told them to do something else, they generally won't stop until you tell them to, or until their needs get too drastic to ignore.
You're right, they're all made by the same team.
I love The Sims 3 and the game has given me tons of entertainment, but realize that EA/Maxis are NOTORIOUS for releasing games with serious bugs and glitches. The games and expansions are not cheap - I probably have at least $350 invested in my collection, maybe more - and it still shuts down randomly, freezes, refuses to save games based on some imaginary "memory" problem (I have plenty of memory.). So...there's that.
But it is a ton of fun. I'm not sad I bought them, but I will not be buying The Sims 4, which was announced last month and is due out in 2014. I'm tired of shelling out money for a game that behaves the way this one does. I'll complete my The Sims 3 collection and then just play it for the rest of my life.
