Re: Fanny's Humanity

No, Persuasion and Northanger Abbey were published posthumously. Mansfield Park was the next one written after Pride and Prejudice, before Emma, if I remember correctly, but in real life that represented several years during which Austen's father died and other difficult things happened, so she wasn't the girl she was when she wrote the original versions of S&S and P&P. I like Mansfield Park, personally, and I like Fanny, but I know that not everyone feels that way.

The more I read the book, actually, the less I feel that Fanny is super virtuous, the more I can see how much she is driven and affected by her own emotions as much as anyone, but she always really tries to do what she believes is right, even when her natural timidity makes it hard for her. In the end, she is not that much superior to Edmund in judgment, I think, it's just that her different view point on everything informed her differently, and her love for him kept her safe from other temptations.
