If I recall correctly, when this story was being posted, the legal impossibility of marrying one's stepmother was discussed in the tea room and the author indicated that she had researched this topic and was aware of the details. I can't remember if she indicated it was an E&D resolution at the end, though I admit I have no idea how it could all be resolved if she did intend to reach that outcome.
