I stick any footnote at the end of a chapter posted in italics on FF which tends to be an historical expansion purely for those who are interested, or, in the case of areas, a description of the architectural phenomenon added when I'd had enough American readers not having any picture in their heads what an area is. I tend to assume, on the whole, however, that unless I came upon something obscure which is fun to share, the reader ought to be intelligent enough to google anything that's obscure. The hymns are obscure enough and fun to share. It's more fun to read though if the information can somehow be inserted into the body of the story [well I find it fun, but then I'm a geek] perhaps in explaining to someone, or by showing more than telling by incident.
