Re: Drugs in the Regency

I have a story that needed Mrs Bennet and Lydia out of the way in an appropriate angsty fashion. So I had Wickham run away with Mrs Forster, which causes Lydia to go nuts screaming that he was supposed to leave with her. Mr Bennet finally has to act, and sends her to a very strict school, and she's so unhappy, Mrs Bennet's 'nerves' act up enough Mr Jones gives her laudanum. Then Lydia tries to run away from the school with someone and falls to her death. Mrs Bennet hears, and overdoses herself and dies, too. Fortunately for the family's reputation, Mrs Bennet's death is ruled an accident, and Darcy helps spread the tale that Lydia died in a 'prank' instead of trying to escape. Wickham is dead by this time, too, since he left Mrs Forster once they got to Town to go to Mrs Younge, and Mrs Forster tracked them down, killed Wickham and Younge with his saber and then poisoned herself: there are bodies everywhere. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind, and I wanted to give Jane and Darcy (in this case) a real chance at happiness (and someday I will finish it and give them their happy ending)...
