M and one or two in his class write phonetically. I don't think there are more than 2 or 3 who can read or write to some beginner-extent out of the 33 in his class.
I know from one of M's friends's mothers that the boy has zero interest in it. She's not one to encourage him either, but I think they are pretty exemplary of the majority, actually. There's always that 'oh leave them be, they'll have to do so much later' which is too extreme for me sometimes, but I don't like the other extreme very much either.
