Jaimy,
Like Mariak, I'm inclined to think that Darcy suffers less from a lonely childhood than he does from a lonely young adulthood, thrust into a position of heavy responsibility while barely out of his teens, losing both his parents at a comparatively young age, and having responsibility for raising a much younger sister.
This, I think, would be enough, be his childhood happy or sad, lonely or filled with friends, to turn him into a taciturn individual uncomfortable in crowds, and uncomfortable outside of his own familiar circle.
